Saccharomyces boulardii is a gut-friendly probiotic yeast, not bacteria. Yeast-based probiotics are particularly unique because they're not harmed by the drugs and chemicals that can damage other probiotics and bacteria. Unlike bacterial probiotics, S. boulardii isn’t affected by antibiotics, so it can be given at the same time as antibiotic treatment. This can be helpful to reduce digestive side effects that antibiotics often cause. Studies have shown that when S. boulardii is given along with an antibiotic, dogs are much less likely to develop digestive upset from the medication.
